Morbid McCuriosity

If you enjoy watching cars collide or skiers tumble downhill in slo-mo, then you'll love John McCain's acceptance speech tonight.

I mentioned some of this in a previous several days ago, but here's what to watch for:

1) Agents of Change: McCain will hammer hard on the new theme: how he and Palin represent the true agents of change for America, not Obama. He will reiterate that the "right" change is better than Obama's "wrong" or "left" change.

2. Attack, Attack, Attack: You know the drill, although the GOP would be off their game if they didn't introduce a few fresh zingers in McCain's speech.

3. Between Iraq and a Soft Place: McCain, if he is to have any chance at all, must begin drifting to the center tonight, away from the radical conservatism of his party. Even Palin's speech was more centrist compared to her record, and McCain's people have watched as the poll numbers haven't budged for him since Day 1 of the convention. He will mix it up with strong "radical Muslim extremist" talk, appeals against "tax-and-spend liberals" and softer rhetoric on social issues, save abortion. He will, of course, be somewhat more specific on policy, but not much — which is to say, you won't notice any difference.

4. Strategy Seeds: McCain will sprout his fall strategy tonight. Look for references to "reform" and "change." Also look for clever ways he will insinuate that Obama is unpatriotic and radical. And look for a few new arguments against Obama/Biden. They won't all be one-time one-liners.

5. Prompt This: Will McCain blow his lines on the teleprompter? He may have practiced recently. We'll see.

6. Mr. Funny/Serious Man: McCain knows how to turn from comedy to tragedy on a dime. Just watch.

7. Heart Strings: From anecdotes of his past to some heart-breaking tale of a mother in distress, watch McCain pull at the heartstrings tonight. Did we mention he was a POW, y'all?

I agree with all but the attack. After Palin last night, McCain is going to take the high ground. I think they realize that it turned off a lot of people.

Don't make me say I told you so.
