Positive Support & Anxiety Attacks

Josh Marshall asks who does McCain need around him to make him feel comfortable enough to go.  Two thoughts.  McCain's affection runs deep for Lieberman; I think he thinks of him, even treats him like a 'wing man.'  He's certainly served McCain in that way.

You not only need people around you that give you a comfort zone, but you also need people not there that make you anxious.  I think that Palin actually makes McCain nervous.  He know who she really is, how dangerous she can be (hence keeping her under wraps and away from the debates).  This is especially the case on foreign policy.  As an attendee of the debates, rather than the main act, it is especially unpredictable and precarious, as run ins with reporters is a distinct possibility for Palin.  So, I think if he goes to the debate, he'll have Sarah off doing something appropriately insignificant.

That is a pretty snarky question from Josh. I can't believe you took it seriously. It wasn't McCain holed up in a hotel cramming for the foreign policy debate. Marshall is setting you up for a big letdown when old McCain walks over our candidate when they debate. Obama is wrong about too many foreign policy issues to do well in the polls following the first debate. We should be lowering expectations, not raising them.

Sorry to hear about his fear of flying.

I'm not sure it's such a cake-walk for McCain, and as the underdog on foreign policy Obama only has to look reasonable capable.

I don't know Josh's motives, but I live in a big horse racing town, and I've spent my time at the track. McCain is manifesting behavior that is very very typical of betters as they see their in the 6th race of the day and no great picks in the last three. People get unhinged. McCain seems like the lug nuts are off the wheels and the cars beginning to wobble. Gun it!
