The Economy is Tanking - Who does this help?
Lehman Bros is bankrupt. AIG is in a hole. WAMU may go bankrupt. The market is going to crash in the morning. Who does this help election wise? Will people be more willing to believe McCain lies or looking for real help from Obama?

I think McCain has pretty much called dibs on the "economy isn't that bad" line; plus, his party's in power. So I'd say deepening economic mayhem hurts him.
Indeed, McCain economic advisor Luskin has an ill-timed op ed in tomorrow's Wash Post berating Obama for saying the economy's bad. (I leave for another day his literary trope of Obama being "patient zero" spreading an "infection" of economic pessemism). See:

Ouch. Poor timing indeed. Somehow I think this won't affect his being able to create fiction for Wapo.

From "whiners" to "exaggerators" this op ed will make a great out of touch ad for Obama:

Gaaa!!! Luskin bugs the living crap out of me.
Here's my favorite recent quote from the idiot:
But that's a scam. If you make just one little adjustment -- treat Richard Nixon as a Democrat, since his economic agenda was more like a Democrat than a Republican -- the whole thing falls apart. The numbers completely reverse. Any analysis that's that fragile is just no good.
The guy also likes to take credit for Kennedy as a republican.
