Time's Joe Klein slams McCain again!

Time's Joe Klein blows the lid off of McCain's backdoor attempts to bully the press ("play the refs"). His view of the vetting Palin is now receiving is spot on:

So what's going on here? Two things. McCain is just plain angry at us. By the evidence presented in the utterly revealing Time interview, he's ballistic. This is a politician who needs to see himself as the man on the white horse, boldly traversing a muddy field...any intimations that he's gotten muddied in the process, or has decided to throw mud, are intolerable.

The second thing is more insidious: Steve Schmidt has decided, for tactical reasons, to slime the press. He wants the public to believe that there is an unfair--sexist (you gotta love it)--personal assault going on against Palin and her family. This is a smokescreen, intended to divert attention from the very real and responsible vetting that is taking place in the media--about the substance of Palin's record as mayor and governor. Sure, there are a few outliers--and the tabloid press--who have fixed on baby stories. That was inevitable....the flip side of the personal stories that the McCain team thought would work to their advantage--Palin's moose-hunting and wolf-shooting, and her admirable decision to have a Down Syndrome baby. And yes, when we all fix on the same story, whether it's a hurricane or a little-known politician, a zoo ensues. But the media coverage of the Palin story has been well within the bounds of responsibility. Schmidt is trying to make it seem otherwise, a desperate tactic.

There is a tendency in the media to kick ourselves, cringe and withdraw, when we are criticized. But I hope my colleagues stand strong in this case: it is important for the public to know that Palin raised taxes as governor, supported the Bridge to Nowhere before she opposed it, pursued pork-barrel projects as mayor, tried to ban books at the local library and thinks the war in Iraq is "a task from God." The attempts by the McCain campaign to bully us into not reporting such things are not only stupidly aggressive, but unprofessional in the extreme.

It sure took a while.
But, as I've commented before, it appears Joe Klein has finally grown a pair.
There may yet be hope for Wolf Blitzer.
Nah, what was I thinking?

McCain has lost the election, and the MSM wants to back a winner. Journalistic integrity has absolutely nothing to do with it.

That's a pretty cynical point of view.

In fact, it's *so* cynical, it's probably true.

Unfortunately Klein's hope that his colleagues would stand strong will be to no avail. It was painfully obvious this morning on the Situation Room that they were all cringing. Even Cafferty!

I know CNN is weak but Cafferty too?

NYT slams McCain's pick:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/03/opinion/03wed1.html?ref=opinion

"To address those many problems, this country needs a leader with sound judgment and strong leadership skills. Choosing Ms. Palin raises serious questions about Mr. McCain’s qualifications."

Holy crap!

Joe Klein is committed to... reporting the objective truth!

That does it. I am going to start reading him now.

Don't you just love when a journalist has something called a BACKBONE.

Joe is doing an excellent job lately. McCain wants his story to be told, but the American public would much rather hear the truth. This woman wants to be vice president of the United States, and we the people have a simple, basic right to know who she is. The Republicans and the press went after Michelle Obama for weeks (months?) over her "proud of my country" comment. And yet they've barely touched the story of Todd Palin's membership in an anti-American organization called the Alaska Independence Party--a group that advocates Alaska's secession from the union. A group whose founder once stated, "The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government. And I won't be buried under their damn flag."

For weeks the Republicans and the press demanded that Barack Obama apologize for the statements of U.S. Ambassador Edward Peck--statements falsely attributed to Obama's pastor. Will the press give equal time to Joe Vogler's hate speech? I doubt it.

Klein's brethren better respond in kind and fight McCain's efforts to label the major MSM as the enemy. You can believe Fox, Rush, etal are going to take up the charge starting tomorrow using Palin's outrageous charges and lies to slam both Obama and the media.

Hope for Wolf Blitzer???

About as soon as Obama rejects and denounces Christianity, converts to Judism, and seeks Israeli citizenship.

But then again, probably not even then. McBush's chief foreign policy adviser/spokesman already has the Israeli citizenship & jewishness cornered. After all, for Wolf 'AIPAC' Blitzer it comes down to the candidate who best kisses AIPCA asses.

As a progressive Jew, let me state that that has NOTHING to do with real Jewishness... but I guess you know that, right?

Again and again and again and again and again...

...somehow expecting a different result?

Oki-doki

Lalo, instead of relishing your role as the self-appointed TPM Political Correctness Cop, why don't you favor us with an example of the intellectual decorum in which you wish everyone would engage?

Is there a link to the whole interview anywhere? I can only seem to find a small excerpt of it...

With that said, I can only stand up and applaud for Joe Klein.

More from Klein:

"Slowly, slowly, I am recovering from the extremely effective bilge festival staged by the Republicans last night. And while there is much to discuss, there was one item, in particular, that has to be considered infuriating: the attack on Barack Obama's service as a community organizer by the odious Rudy Giuliani--he's come to look like a villain in a Frank Capra movie, hasn't he?--and Sarah Palin."

Hey, journos take note. This is what a real journalist does. Not horse race bs like "gosh, her speech was full of lies and vitriol, but how will it play with Joe Sixpack?!!"
