Feedback Please! (CPU Maxxing Out on TPM)

I just realized that my CPU maxxes out when I'm on TPM.

Is anyone else having this problem?

As far as I can tell, it seems to occur only on pages with embedded video (for example, on this page everything's fine). Though it's particularly bad when using Firefox 3.0, I've also found that the CPU usage is higher than normal when the same pages are opened with Internet Explorer 7.0. (I've compared similar pages at Huffington Post, and the CPU usage is much lower with both browsers.)

Although there's a chance the problem is due to some isolated incompatibility on my system, I suspect that it might be of a more general nature.

So, if you've recognized a problem using your computer on TPM, then please recommend this. Include your system and browser info in a comment with your own observations if you get a chance.

Thanks!

My system:

OS: Windows XP, SP3
Firefox 3.0.3
Internet Explorer 7.0

I have the identical configuration. I find equivalent CPU usage for TPM and Huffington Post/ Major newsppers, like NY TImes and Washington Post, seem to be less CPU demand.

Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.0.3) Gecko/2008092414 Firefox/3.0.3

top shows firefox-bin peaking at around 4% CPU time here, averaging 1.8% when I browsed the various sections (although I am compiling something, which may be pushing it down one or two points.)

I would not be surprised if the Windows version were not quite as lean, but it could also be a script issue, or Flash if Windows does not differentiate it from the parent process when running embedded content.

Try updating Flash, and install Adblock and NoScript to help with resource consumption.

Ah--another thing: are you running a multi- or single-core system and is it 32- or 64-bit? (E.g. Intel Core 2 Duo has two "cores" or processing units on the same die so that it can split work between the two simultaneously.)

One possibility might be that Firefox exhibits poor characteristics on a single-core system.
