I have a quick question for Mr. McCain.
This has been bothering me for a while, and I have not been on TPM for a while, at least not enough to know what has, and has not been asked or followed up on. So if I tread on ground that has already been paved, I offer my sincere apologies.
On April 4th, 2006 McCain gave a speech at the AFL-CIO. He was challenged by a member of the audience that said they would take a Job picking lettuce for $50 an hour. McCain in a stern voice said that Americans could not/would not do a job such as pick lettuce. It's as if they/we are not hard workers, or to elite, or not strong enough to handle it. http://mrsensible.com/?p=37
Then as we all know on Sept 15th, he again pointed out that the American worker is the fundamental of the economy and I quote:
"My opponents may disagree, but those fundamentals of America are strong," McCain said this afternoon in Orlando. "No one can match an American worker. Our workers sell more goods to more markets than any other on earth. Our workers have always been the strength of our economy, and they remain the strength of our economy today."
So here is the question, and I wish someone on the campaign trail, or even one of the pundits would point this out, if the American worker is so strong in McCain's eyes and he is so strongly and utterly resistant that they are anything less than that, why is it he thinks that Americans would not pick lettuce, or oranges, or whatever for $50 dollars an hour? Does he think that migrant workers are stronger than the American worker? Im just asking the question and wonder why his own words (audio) have not been thrown in his face about this. I think if most Americans knew what he said and heard him say these things that totaly contradict themselves, they would be even more convinced that McCain is out of touch.

I had this same thought when Senator McCain first started blathering about how "strong fundamentals" really meant he believes in the American worker.
I am not sure why the apparent contradiction has not gotten more attention. Could be MSM filtering. Could be that people have just forgotten. One thing that I have only fairly recently learned (and somewhat surprisingly) is that far fewer people are aware of his AFL-CIO speech than I would have thought or liked. Maybe it's time for a viral youtube video? Cut back and forth between the two clips and set it to a snazzy sound track?

Exactly llOOll.....
I think it is time. I would not see that as a negative add, even though the gloves came off supposedly....I dont see why the Obama campaign has not put this together as you indicate above. You know, they start that Obama is a terrorist, the Obama campaign drops this (vid) to change the subject back to the economy. McCain should have no cred on the economy after the people were to hear it from his own mouth...Really he hasn't any now.

I could probably try to put one together - but it could be tough finding a video record of the AFL-CIO town hall. Any thoughts on where to acquire?
Thanks.

Sean,
McCain just makes up stuff to defend what ever stand he has taken on a given day. When he made the $50.00 per hour remark, he was doing so to defend his stand on migrant workers.
When he started bragging on how great American workers are, he was trying to persuade people that is what he meant when he said: "the fundamentals of the economy are strong".
McCain has no core principles or values. That is why he just teeters from one expedient lie to another.
That is why he is The Original Mav-Erratic.
