Religious Intolerance at McCain Rally in Davenport, Iowa

The voice of religious intolerance spoke loudly and clearly Saturday at a John McCain rally in Davenport, Iowa. During his invocation preceding the rally, Rev. Arnold Conrad told the crowd not only that they should pray for a McCain victory but also that alleged enemies of Christianity around the world were praying for Barack Obama to win the US presidential election (see video).

"There are millions of people around this world praying to their god - whether it's Hindu, Buddha, Allah - that [McCain's] opponent wins, for a variety of reasons...," Rev. Conrad said, "...And Lord, I pray that you will guard your own reputation, because they're going to think that their God is bigger than you, if that happens."

Now, if Rev. Conrad has an actual degree in theology or divinity from some reputable institution of higher learning (which I doubt), then his program obviously didn't include any studies in comparative religion as any such program should. If it had, then Rev. Conrad would know that "Hindu" is not the name of a god to whom one prays, but of a religion and the followers of that religion. "Buddha," the founder of Buddhism, was a man, not a god, despite his sacred status; and in any case, Buddhists don't "pray to Buddha" for things they want. "Allah," Rev. Conrad should also know, is simply the Arabic name for the same God worshipped by Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike. Arabic-speaking Christians also call God "Allah." Most ridiculous in Conrad's remarks was the idea that Christians and non-Christians ought to be fighting over whose god is "bigger" - an assertion so childish and stupid that it hardly merits discussion at all.

Rev. Conrad is obviously an ignorant bigot. His remarks not only fly in the face of the fact that Obama himself is a Christian, but also posit a world in which people of different faiths must always be at war with one another, and in which anyone who doesn't happen to be a Christian must be considered an enemy of Christianity. This is the same mindset that brought us the Crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, and the Salem Witch Trials; and it has no place in the 21st Century.

Conrad's remarks came before McCain arrived at the rally, and the McCain campaign - anxious to salvage what little remains of its reputation following weeks of shameless hate-mongering at rallies such as this - quickly put out a statement distancing itself from the remarks, saying that they "distract from the real questions in this race about Barack Obama's judgment, policies and readiness to lead as commander in chief."

The McCain campaign's sudden change of heart on hate speech at rallies may be too little, too late, however: The hate-mongering of recent days at these events appears likely to have unalterably set the tone for the McCain campaign, which in its final weeks has come increasingly to look like a lynch mob.

Well, as a Christian, I have had any many opportunities to feel embarrassed by my fellow believers lately...This is one of them. The arrogance of anyone praying that God needs to make sure McCain wins so as to protect His reputation...

Really, I promise you, not all Christians are THAT stupid.

This sect of Christians loves the idea of religious wars, you're talking about people who constantly stroke the belief that the end times are near and they'll be called upon to fight the armies of Satan. If only it were that simple. Satan's army would have much better music than Brooks & Dunn.

This guy feels like someone aligned with Palin's views. How do you navigate freedom of religion in a society with people who believe that they need the 'end of days' to happen and are willing to do things or accept things that would normally go against their values and morals to 'bring it on'?

I have heard that Sarah Palin's religious views are one of the reasons that many Jewish voters have decided to vote for senator Obama. They are concerned about how exclusive her particular religion is.

Newsweek has a piece on it this week.

Dr. Arnold Conrad served as a pastor in the Evangelical Free Church for 37 years. He received a Doctor of Ministry Degree in Church Management from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in 2004.
That's from the website of the organization that Conrad runs, which is sort of the Evangelical minister version of a rent-a-cop security business, but instead of supplying temporary security staff made up of retired and part-time cops, they provide temporary and retired ministers for churches in-between ministers, or for weddings/funerals/etc. Conrad's email, and the 1-800 phone number of his organization are provided on the linked page. They also provide this Feedback Page.

Trinity Evangelical seems to be a legitimate divinity school in Deerfield Iowa. They do not offer precisely the degree he claims, but at Large State U. where I once matriculated, they offered four different BA programs in liberal arts in the five years I attended. However, that said, a doctorate in Church Management seems to me kind of like a BA in Sports Administration.

Not Deerfiled, Iowa. Deerfield, Illinois.

Nice job. Rev Conrad forgot to mention my favorite faith Mayanism. There's a religion with some real balls. No vague clues about the end of the world for them, they picked a date by God .... Dec. 21st. 2012.

Will the adults please step in now?

Republican adults? They are in hiding, which doesn't speak well to them as people or to the party.

I'm SHOCKED! Someone in the McPalin mob an ignorant bigot!?!?!?!?! And from above:

Dr. Arnold Conrad served as a pastor in the Evangelical Free Church for 37 years. He received a Doctor of Ministry Degree in Church Management from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in 2004.

So he was a "minister" for 33 years before he got his on-line degree? Yeah, I'll bet he learned a lot!

"they're going to think that their God is bigger than you"

It never ceases to amaze me how Evangelical Christians never have a clue about their Freudian slips.

What surprises me most is that Arnold Conrad was invited to do the invocation at a major political party's event. Anybody can buy "ordained status" online for $39.99 from Revs-R-Us.

The money Mr Conrad paid for his "Reverend" title would have been better spent on a few good books on theology. Or if that doesn't do the trick, a lobotomy.
