Wide-Open Blogging Allows Personal Attacks

Ah, the old days, when we had Discussion Tables requiring votes to get on the board. We kind of ignored the blogs, since they often had spam and invective. All we have are unmoderated blog posts, and certain people have been getting nasty regarding certain others, and some continue to complain about the company here. (It's not clear to me what reward there is in being unpopular, except for the troll-like enjoyment of seeing any reaction.) Some of us are constant gadflies, always bringing a contrary viewpoint to our favorite topics, and that's a fine tradition. Some look for data to counter a point, and some look for data to confirm a point. Some raise an argument that needs more attention. Some raise an issue not getting any attention. But it doesn't help the site or our politics to attack others directly, in the blog list.

Well, I disagree, Tom.

And you're an ass.

;-p

Actually, I'm not comfortable with the personal hostilities on display here either. I realize hostilities are bound to flare up from time to time, but a constant background hum of sniping can bring down the overall tone of this place.

I appreciate your measured, thoughtful contributions, Tom. I especially enjoy your simple response to irrational or intemperate comments and posts: "Oy." Always makes me smile.

I agree. I try my best to ignore personal attacks and such, but occasionally I feel compelled to respond.

No no no! You're completely wrong (stupid). Tom is like lipstick on an ass.

Give a terrorist a fish and he can -- shame on you.

Tom.

Let's face it, while there were some personal battles and attacks under the old system, they were, in general, relegated to the easily avoided reader blogs or threads focusing on the I/P conflict. (Who can forget Howard C Berkowitz vs davai ( ;>}) or Daniel Greenbaum's relentless attacks on MJ and the Cafe community?)

This is a post-"upgrade" development exacerbated by the primary. Perhaps we'll see a different environment after the election but if this shitty "rec" system is still in place, I won't expect much change. Hope I'm wrong. The current system encourages posters who get their ego boosts from gaming the system and deliberate incitement is the surest bet to stimulate the response that feeds their "needs".

Even though I didn't participate in it, the old ratings system more or less "worked" and the present one doesn't.

There's nothing wrong with calling out someone's ideas specifically -- it's when you call out someone themselves that the game changes.

However, I submit that the reason why we see this is there is a scapegoat group here that no one seems to have an issue trashing:

repugs
rethugs
Republicans are fascist
McLame/McShame etc.

We routinely see posts that fall under the neat Orwellian bleat of

"Four legs good, two legs bad."

What happens is that enough of this bleating legitimizes these types of discussions -- which, of course, brings down the general tone of the boards.

If we required more scholarly expression of points of view, I guarantee you that the tone of the board would change.

The "problem" (viewed in this light of trying to change the board tone) is that some people come here for reasons other than enlightenment and discussion. Loneliness being one, boredom being another. Still others come here to see their name in lights.

And here lies the rub. I think this also explains why some of blogs more akin to PEOPLE magazine are on the rec list while others more akin to THE ECONOMIST are not.

I am finding more consistent content on DailyKos these days, but perhaps the new software will help these issues.

I guess that let's YOU out then, Mr. 'gas will be $5.00 a gallon by the end of summer and won't EVER go back down.'

See ya.

I was supposed to come here for enlightenment? brb... I just need to go tell Buddha he is no longer needed...

Okay, CT, I am at your knees w/ my elbows on the ground and my chin on my fists... all starry eyed...

Enlighten me.

Clearthinker, you really are too much. You say that there's nothing wrong with calling out someone's ideas. I agree. But that's not what you do. Very often, you don't refute an idea with any kind of cogent analysis. Instead, you offer a backhanded compliment before being incredibly insulting.

And then when the writer is angry and comes back at you, you respond with, "I'm sorry you're so sensitive. I was only pointing out that your ideas have zero merit and you're a total idiot."

That's a sure way to win friends and raise the tone of the debate.

As for the bitching and moaning that has increased over the past week, you have a choice. Leave.

You do not control the thoughts and actions of anybody on this site save yourself, and, as such, individuals will continue to say whatever they want, with little to no regard for your opinion. So, for the love of God, please stop the sanctimonious lecturing. If you don't like the tone, there are 4 gazillion other sites where you can be magnanimously and arrogantly insulting to your little heart's content.

You have some good points, Tom. And we've discussed this stuff extensively elsewhere. The web, I find, is a place where you need a thick skin. Some people love the ability to anonymously prey on others. I try to ignore that kind of an attack. And I find it interesting that some people either can't resist attacking back or seem to come to the aid of other bloggers. It's a fascinating process, actually.

But I'm glad you posted on this. Thanks!

Communities always form, but the rules they follow have some variation. I don't expect people to never say anything mean, I'm not a Pollyanna, but I felt we had a consensus that we like this place. Therefore, we should protect the commons, which means the listed blog post titles.

That means not inviting counterattack by posting incendiary titles. Nasty stuff can also show up on Google searches and get bandied around as exemplifying wacko liberals.

But if the shoe fits? The fact is, the reader blogs are full of wacko liberals and people whose hatred for America goes beyond Bush, McCain and the Republicans.

And the comments on the main threads are completely wacko.

If you can't see this site is nothing but a hysterical Obama rally, you're not paying attention, Tom.

I wish you the joy of it.

ah billy, you'd made such great progress the last couple days. c'mon, you don't really mean that do ya?

user-pic

May I call you Bill? (We haven't been introduced.)

If you actually think this site is nothing but that then you are deluded by your own disappointments. But I remain because of the history here. I've been posting here since late 2005. I think I have standing to comment on the current nature of the site.

It is the lack of moderated posts and the highlighting of unmoderated blogs that puts wackos front and center. But the majority are not that, they are you and me, just people with opinions, who like to discuss and argue. And if the majority support the Democratic nominee that is not group-think but just group agreement.

Well said.

You can call me Billy. And you can go to my blog and find out anything you want to know about me.

Don't conflate the reader blogs with the Cafe articles. I'm talking about wackos in the reader blogs, their threads and the constant, yammer of mindless apes in the main threads every time someone like Greg Sergeant trashes McCain.

I've said for a long time that the solution to the reader blog space is to enable the bloggers to moderated comments on their own blogs. I'm not going to go down the rat hole of endless what ifs on that.

It all comes down to quality. Bloggers who stimulate discussion and have interesting comment threads will survive. Bloggers who abuse the moderation privilege will fall by the wayside.

Do I really believe the site is overrun by wackos? You bet I do.

As you can tell by my comments on the latest blog devoted to trashing me, I'm not very interested in sticking around.

user-pic

Apparently we can now moderate comments to our own blog posts, and have to so new comments will show.

But I don't address you by name since we're not friends. Its not whether I've read your bio.

That we can screen comments is interesting, but it won't stop the screeds and spam, unless some other filter exists that I'm not aware of.

user-pic

Well, if that's true it should clean up the reader blog space fast. Enjoy.

I don't know that any one blogsite can be all things to all people. We are all here for different reasons.

I am not an intellectual, although I consider myself to be of reasonable intelligence. Some of the conversations here are way over my head, but I still read them in hopes of learning, and often do. In these conversations, I normally keep my mouth shut and just listen. Every once in awhile I will hear something that makes me crazy, or makes me want to cheer and I'll add a comment.

Every once in awhile I'll venture into the conversation. Most of the time, people are respectful and will disagree politely. Some of the times I remember most fondly are heated discussions with people I'm pretty sure think I'm an idiot, but they teach and ask questions, acknowledge when I have a good point, and sometimes even "dumb down" the conversation a little so I can participate.

But, I'm not always in the mood for an argument, and the posts that point me to interesting articles keep me from having to scour the net...a time saver I find valuable, so I'd hate to see those go away.

And I like that people like me have the opportunity to spout off from time to time. My posts are more emotional than intellectual, so I try to keep them to a minimum, and rely mostly on "comments" to make my points.

I like the community post that Raider started, and that I've been babysitting. It's nice to see things on there that don't get enough rec's to be around for awhile. It's a good place for newbie's posts to be highlighted...Although I enjoy very much the posts that you big guys make, and that almost always make the reader rec list, it's nice to hear from the little guys, too.

Anyway, my point is, this place, for all it's warts is the best blogsite I've found. It really does feel like a community, and I'm enjoying being a small part of it.

Until the software upgrade in early primary days we often heard the refrain that no other place was like TPM. After the change I went looking for anything similar and found nothing.

user-pic

Thanks for posting this - I've found nothing that is what this was, either, so it's good to see that this conversation is still going on.
