What if Obama Loses? What will Happen?

What if John McCain wins the November 4th election? What happens if he wins by just one state as in the previous presidential elections? What happens if Barack Obama wins the popular vote but loses the electoral vote? Exactly how will Americans react to yet another unforeseen result on their Election Day?

Let's take a quick look at what the polls are telling Americans today. According to Realclearpolitics.com, there is not one national poll that shows Senator John McCain ahead. When it comes to the usual battleground states (Ohio, Florida, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Nevada, North Carolina and Indiana) not one poll has John McCain ahead as of 4 days away from Election Day.

Let's look at how Americans feel about President George W. Bush and his administration's actions over the past 8 years. Bush currently has about a 30% approval rating. According to a CBS poll, 81% of Americans feel the country is headed in the wrong direction. McCain's approval ratings are around 52% and Obama's is 64% according to an ABC poll.

Now let's compare the rallies that Senator Barack Obama and Senator John McCain appear at. According to the media stories, it is Barack Obama that gets 10's of thousands of voters to show up, whereas John McCain is lucky to get a few thousand (unless he has Governor Sarah Palin with him, then there's more - but nothing compared to Obama's rallies).

Let's also look at who from the other side is supporting the enemy sort of speak. John McCain has gained Independent Joe Lieberman and a speech writer named Wendy Button from the Democrat side. Senator Obama has Jim Leach, Lincoln Chafee, Douglas W. Kmiec, Jackson Andrews, John Martin, Francis Fukuyama and Colin Powell just to name a few.

What Republicans have had favorable comments about Obama: Peggy Noonan, George Will, Rich Lowry and William Bennett to name just a few. These same folks had unfavorable comments toward McCain.

According to the media and political pundits, Barack Obama, barring any major development or scandal showing up, will win on Tuesday with anywhere from 280-320 electoral votes.

Going back to the original question, how will supporters of Barack Obama feel if he loses narrowly? What will they do about it, if anything? I'm afraid to say it but because of previous losses and they way they were supposedly 'lost', and because of the things Obama's supporters have been told for the past two months where things stood in the election, I'm almost certain there will be riots and people getting hurt.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating violence; I'm afraid of it happening.

It won't just be 'just' another political loss. Voters will feel cheated in a huge way. They will feel lied to by the media, the political pundits and the 'other side'. They will not believe any so-called 'facts' that are later reported.

Those 'newly' registered voters that actually voted will most likely refuse to ever vote again. They won't trust the system. I know I won't and I've been voting for 40 years now.

If Obama's losing, I sure hope polls start showing that BEFORE Election Day instead of once again getting voter's hopes up and then just knocking them down once again.

Can you clean up your code a bit? It's weirding out the design of the site when folks look at your post.

user-pic

What do you mean clean up my code Andrew? How do I do that?

I don't understand this comment. I have no trouble viewing this post or this page. What does this mean?

At least he got to blog. My last attempt got dropped into the abyss.

How about fixing the numerous bugs in the site before complaining about users using the site? How about extending the Recent Reader Posts list since you all can't post daily and weekly archives? How about fixing the other problems users have documented for you?

I find it quite snarky that you would complain about Coonsey's "code." I have noticed that this is becoming the standard TPM response to users lately. Defensive and snarky.

We deserve better than that. Without us -- reading, commenting, recommending, posting, cross-posting, linking, quoting, and delivering those all important page views (you know, the ones that drive your ad revenue), you have nothing.

Yet again dems threaten violence (or suggest it might happen) if they lose. As Bush said, bring it on.

user-pic

With the active-duty military and vets going six to one for Obama, I wouldn't be so quick to tell the 70% of the country not down with Bush and McCain to "bring it on" unless you are ready for another American civil war. That doesn't even account for all the guns in the hands of civilians. This country is like a powder keg waiting for a spark. Has been for forty years.

user-pic

You are totally insane if you think military is 6 to 1 for Obama. The last survey I saw was 3 to 1 for McCain.

user-pic

Well, all we can go on at this point is donations, which have been been in Barack's favor. Sorry, you appear to be right that it isn't a six to one advantage however. It appears that it has tightened up and he is only just edging McCain among uniformed military.

Suggestion if you are afraid to say it it probably shouldn't be said.
It has no basis in fact. The reality, will some be angry? Yes. Especially if it's like 2000 and there is a sense that the election was fraudulent. But violence i just don't see it. It is not our way.

The sun will come up, the world will continue to turn on it's axis, the stars will still be the sky. Those who still have jobs will go to work. Will it be a miserably sad four years? most definitely.

Agreed. We Dems want to win, but there is also a history in the progressive movement of enjoyment at being a victim. If McCain wins, it will be prima facie evidence of a stolen election. And I will feel screwed and victimized. And then I will get to blame our shithole state of affairs on the republicans, just like always.

There will be no violence. Good grief.

This time around you've got THOUSANDS of YOUNG people voting or at least involved. They aren't satisfied to just SIT it out and wait for next time. You've also got a multi racial issue this time around.

The combination could mean trouble. That's what I fear.

user-pic

Rather than worry about losing how about helping get out the vote so we can be sure we don't.

user-pic

You have no idea what I'm doing or not with respects to getting out the vote.

Ignoring what could happen is sort of like a Bush reaction - Isn't it?
