OK, I have a question. How was John McCain serving his country when he was 17?

I just saw his new ad, and I heard for the umpteenth time that he has been serving the country since he was 17.  He was born in 1936, which would put make him 17 years old in 1953.  He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1958.

So, was he serving the country in high school?  And was he serving the country while he was in the Naval Academy?  I thought he was getting "educated" on the tax-payer's dime during that time.  He surely wasn't knocking himself out academically (at least I hope he wasn't trying his hardest, considering his very low standing in his graduating class).

Does anyone ever challenge his stuff?

Even without the "serving ever since he was 17" -- the question I want someone to ask him is this:

You say you have been tested.  What test have you passed?

Crashing your plane and being a POW is not a test of Presidential mettle.  I repeat.  What test did you have that you have passed?

Everyone is afraid to challenge him on this because of the POW issue; Wesley Clark is the only person I have seen effectively challenge this absurd notion, and even Barack Obama disavowed him for it.  Clark was right.

Blogging Without the Option of Comment

I never knew that a person could write a blog, put it up for the community, and decline the comments of fellow posters.  "Truthseeker" (an Orwellian name if ever there was one) has done it twice that I am aware of.  It seems to me to defeat one of the very purposes of this site, which I always took to be the give-and-take of ideas.

The ironic thing is that these two dopey posts have gotten highly rec'd by people who say they thought they were clicking to comment, whereas the only "click" option was "recommend."  Anticipating TS's comment that those people are all stupid, I would say pre-emptively, that this level of cowardice is new to TPM, so no one was watching out for it.

I would like to suggest that if the Management continues to allow this, there should be a symbol, or other way to tell from the title itself, so that people like me will know not to waste our time reading someone's words who doesn't want to read mine.

In the mean time, I would suggest to "truthiness" himself that he write his/her diaries in one of  those little ones with a personal lock on it, or otherwise just discuss these weighty subjects with his/her navel -- surely it will be more appreciated.

Bio

The first thing I did when I turned 16 was go out and apply for a passport. I've travelled widely, and lived in Europe for a while. I have 3 children; 23 (girl) 19 (boy twins), and after staying home with them for 17 years, I went back to nursing 3 years ago. It was hard to find someone to hire me, but I am in a wonderful office (infertility, ivf, etc) and work with great people.
