Can We Convulse Yet?

I usually don't do this, but this one rather well sums up the
situation. Just click, I won't do you no harm.

The BBC has this moment memorialized as well, Desidero.

What the heck was McCain thinking? I really hink with all the blinking and tongue jutting, he was over medicated, or maybe just tipsy.

user-pic

I couldn't understand why some of the analysts were going with this notion that Senator McCain was "strong" in the first part of the debate. I'm not a McCain basher, I value his patriotism and his service to this country and I detest quite a bit of stuff I read on here about him, but I really do think he looked absolutely out of his league last night. If it's about style points with respect to any remaining undecided voters last night, I think they would conclude that Senator Obama was the one person on that state who looked and sounded presidential.

Substantively, it was no contest. Although I thought that McCain gave an impressive, albeit conservative presentation with respect to the appointment of judges and education, I think that Senator Obama hit several home runs last night, particularly with respect to healthcare and his intial remarks on how the bailout is only the beginning of an ongoing approach to resolving the current economic crisis. He was a class act in my never-so-humble opinion last night.

Senator Obama demonstrated once again that he deserves to be our next president. Now if I could only kick some of his supporters into shape. . .:)

user-pic

Out of his league describes it well, Bruce. For someone that was actually contemplating voting for McCain a year ago, my disillusionment is complete. As for Obama, my earlier skepticism has been repudiated completely. Obama is "ready for prime-time."

I am sorry about McCain, all I can think is that he did hisself in. I'm not sure if it is due to age, or if he perhaps just had good PR earlier in his career. I just don't see the same man that ran 8 years ago.... anywhere.

user-pic

O/T Good to see you're still posting, Bruce. Just thought I'd let you know our son is scheduled to go to Iraq AGAIN in April. I just don't have the heart to even read the news much less comment on it.

user-pic

Bev, he's going over again? As always, my heart is with you and your whole family. It's really not fair that families like yours are bearing the brunt of this insanity.

I really do miss you here Bev.

user-pic

I didn't have the out of his league reaction. I had the reaction of "I can't believe he had any debate prep at all, or else he ignored the advice given."

He made Al Gore's rolling his eyes and sighing in 2000 look like a minor mistake. He had a huge repertoire of extremely dismissive facial reactions to Obama, almost caricature-like, that went beyond any dismissive statements he made in the past. Not a way to do the Dale Carnegie sales job, win friends and influence people. Maverickness is desirable to many, but treating those you don't agree with like an idiot, especially when they have the same current job you do, is not a part of that.

I think the closeness of the nationwide polls the last months were mainly due to seeing both candidates as people who would work cross-aisle in a civil manner. McCain continues to self-destruct on that front. He got it back for a moment in the sound bites being played where he admonished in town halls for irrational Obama bashing, then he destroys it again in the debate by doing the same thing himself in pantomime.

user-pic

Yeah: you detest the fact being stated that McSlimer has been a fraud from the outset.

user-pic

Oh my, I didn't notice this itty bitty reply. What an incredibly profound contribution to the discourse. Boy did you just zing me. Really, it's very impressive. You have your very own itty bitty meme going on there. Wow. It's vewy, vewy cute. Hee.

user-pic

Hey, it's a good picture.

user-pic

We need your .gif up here, too, but I like the avatar, dem!

user-pic

Don't mind me, I'm just choking on a pretzel.

user-pic

Caption Contest!?

user-pic

Yeah, a better picture, and well, a lot about being president is image, and the old geezer playing "me and my shadow" just ain't gonna cut it.

Funny, that picture's almost archetypal, some kind of Thomas Nast drawing or something, McCain as boogieman or dancing skeleton. Wow.

user-pic

I was thinking more like McZilla vs the O-man.

user-pic

Why didn't Bob Sheiffer shake hands with Obama after the debate as he did with McCain?

user-pic

Shock?

user-pic

Snicker...his family is close to the Bush family from what I've read. Nice to see you here, B.

user-pic

I read that, too. I didn't like his early "moral equivalence" between the two campaigns, but that's what Repubs do.

Hey Bev, I have missed you! I'm sorry to hear about your son, I hope that his April deployment will become unnecessary if Obama gets the nod.

(hugs)

user-pic

Thanks B., missed you too. I just don't see much hope for change.

user-pic

Sometimes, all one can do is keep breathing. I've got hope enough for two, Bev.

user-pic

BevD, when are you coming back here "full-time"? Gosh this place needs you.

user-pic

I notice this about Bev: she's often gone away for weeks at a time in the past. Then she comes on for a while and blasts a lot nonsense being posted, blithely puts up with the grief of the feedback from doing that, including from contributors, the end result raising the discourse level for us all, and then goes away for a while again. :-)

user-pic

I agree. BevD rocks.

user-pic

Co-signed!

user-pic

Maybe it's just my pugilistic side, but I thought McCain was about as effective as he could have been last night given that he is on the wrong side of every real issue. The way he defended his rally crowd and had Obama backpeddling on the criticisms was astounding. But whatever he gained in style points he lost with all these bizarre convulsions and freeze frame pics. This has potential to be worse than the Dean Scream.

Eventually one day the media will focus more on substance than imagery, but these images will not likely be forgotten. I can't wait for Stewart/Colbert tonight :)

user-pic

Y'see Dij, the problem isn't that you're a pugilist, it's that you (and I) are Smokin' Joe Frazier-style fighters, instead of Ali (which is clearly Obama's style.) We just wanna see Smokin' Joe's usual 8000 punches-a-night approach.

And don't tell me I'm wrong, coz I've seen what you named that cat! ;-)

user-pic

Wow, maybe we should take a survey around here to find out which ones are Smokin' Joe fans. Though after Joe knocked out Ali, it was still Joe that spent the time in the hospital. Guess it would have killed most people though - what a strong head.

user-pic

As a *twicth* former fighter, who *twitch* got hit a *twitch* few times, I find it's *twitch* the concuss *twitch* concussionsthatbugmemost.

user-pic

I thought hockey was Canadian slang for boxing.

Or was it vice-versa?

user-pic
Eventually one day the media will focus more on substance than imagery,

Yes, and one day your prince will come!

user-pic

*sigh* A girl can dream, can't she? :)

user-pic

Sorry to disappoint you Quinn, but Ali bomaye! :)

user-pic

Just like those people at Palin rallies...

user-pic

Nice one Des but to be fair English can be such a harsh language. Bomaye sounds so much friendler than "kill him!" I think I'm going to try to be nicer and call people ass chapeaus from now on.

user-pic

Dij. You didn't actually just put the word "ass" next to "chaps" in Des' vicinity? Oh dear. Here comes the parade.....

user-pic

Parade-ass city.

user-pic

That's John Sidney McCain going for his ripcord.

user-pic

A comment from MyDD:

"terrorist tongue jab"

Here's the hilarious thing: The field of Republicans this year was so terrible and so lame that they weren't able to cull this all out during the Primary. In other words, this was the best they could offer.

So Hillary and her supporters were right. Her tough campaign perfected Obama for the General election and by being so tough, made a hack like McCain a cakewalk.

user-pic

I posted this last night, but I guess everyone was in bed.

user-pic

Yep, you scored first blood.

user-pic

At least I wasn't the only one to enjoy it. I had a nice fat grin on my face when this one hit the web just minutes after the debate ended. On the one hand it's just a damned goofy picture, but on the other.. doesn't it say so much? A picture worth a thousand words?

user-pic

I think it says "BLLEAAAGUHLL!"

user-pic

I think McCain threw up the minute it was over.

user-pic

Darn it Des:

This made the to the recommended section and now people are going to see the nice things I wrote about Senator Obama. What about my reputation? Scrubbers, stat! :)

user-pic

It's too late, Bruce. You've been caught with your interloping trousers around your ankles!

user-pic

And then a merry bunch of ankle grabbers showed up on my blog. How do I explain *THAT* to me mum?

user-pic

Okay, I won't tell if you won't. Mum's the word.

user-pic

Who ya gonna believe, me or yer lyin' eyes?

user-pic

How bout a flyer: "McCain is a zombie who wants to eat Obama's brain"

user-pic

Seriously, in his medical records, is he taking any drugs for any psychological problems? I am wondering if he get dry mouth from it... or if experiences numbness in his tongue...?

user-pic

Dry heaves.
