I just got a call from the robotic twin of 'ole Mittens Romney on behalf of our erstwhile gravity-hating congressmoron Bill Sali(ID-1). It's the first contact in over a month and came from some committee, not the campaign. I was just thinking Sali must be near broke due to the lack of contact.

The first thing that jumped out is how respectful the call was: focused on making Sali look good more than making his opponent look bad. I think this is significant because it shows a play for the middle - which is actually the correct move (inconceivable) in Idaho's current climate. More importantly, Sali has typically gone full-bore to the fringe right and this isn't his style at all. Both the tone of the message and the messanger were sort of stunning.

Another thing, it shows is that the republicans are putting money into red Idaho as they lament being cash-strapped and pressed elsewhere in the country. This speaks to just how close this race really is. Sali isn't popular - last election cycle the GOP flew in Cheney at the last minute (at taxpayer expense) and put up extra cash to push him over the top. He's mostly on his own this time against a well funded democrat after some pretty serious stupid political moves beyond simple breathtaking bufoonery.

This is more evidence Romney is making a play to be standard bearer of the GOP's more rational wing. IMO this is also a sign Palin may go down with the McCain ship. The amazing part is Sali the clown linking with Romney. The climb down from negative is rather unexpected. If anything is going to save him it will be rational stuff like this (dammit dammit dammit!). Hopefully someone smart didn't take over, and this is an isolated incident!

This race has inched from Solid GOP to Likely GOP to Leans GOP to Tossup leaning Dem and I'm not sure Greg even acknowledges this seat is in play (dammit again!) ... thankfully Kos sometimes shows us some love. It's a week old, but check out his writeup of the race with some awesome quotes that sum up how other republicans view Sali (make sure to check out the "bunny ears" story near the end - Sali's an idiot!). Sadly, even Kos is a skeptic.

We're on the edge of our seats and I think good things are coming from this race. If the yard signs are any indicator we win hands down they are 5:1 easy; while most folks I talk to refer to him as "that guy with those hunting commercials? Yeah I like him!" not "Isn't he the democrat?!?". Good stuff.
I'm so excited I could just burst! I have been watching my local congressional race - in blood-red Idaho and doing a bit of clandestine campaigning. As I have mentioned previously, the congressional race in Idaho's 1st is way closer than anyone has given it credit for. So needless to say, it was with great pleasure that I found this little gem in the Oregon Live site

Republicans have been worried for months about holding on to their
1st Congressional District seat in Idaho. But I always figured that
just meant they had to actually work hard to keep the seat.

However, Democrat Walt Minnick is now leading GOP Rep. Bill Sali, 51 percent to 45 percent, according to a new SurveyUSA/Roll Call poll. It's tempting, of course, to attribute this to the national climate that is so favorable to Democrats.

I blogged on some confusing polling in September that seemed to show Minnick consistently up by 6. This most recent poll is right in line with those numbers. Locally I've had this feeling for a while, but now I have confidence to say I think that we are going to win this one.

It is going to take a good push to make sure we finish over the top, but the folks in Idaho who have been quietly working to make this happen deserve some serious recognition. There is going to be a big push - and we're bringing this prize home!

As democrats go, Minnick is kind of conservative; but maybe it's time folks take a gander at the likely democratic congressman from Idaho. http://www.waltforcongress.org/ If you are able, maybe lend a hand - we're CLOSE!
While the quote from Douglas Holtz-Eakin about McCain inventing the blackberry was pretty funny, it kind of sucks that everyone ignored the rest of the economic discussion to just focus on that.

NYT's Michael Cooper gets momentarily distracted, but in a surprising fit of journalism decides to also report what McCain plans to do in relation to the Wall Street crisis.

Not surprisingly, Holtz-Eakin lists a bunch of general woes and presents quentessential bogey men - mostly caused by McCain policy. The final sentence is a killer though:

But Mr. Holtz-Eakin did not provide specifics. “I think that the moment
when we write down a specific plan is the moment we send legislation out from a McCain administration to Congress,’’ he said. “That’s the
moment that happens.’’

So essentially, they are saying the only way to find out how they would solve the crisis is to put them in charge and see what the hell they do! And they figure to start working on it sometime around Jan 15th, 2009?

That bothers me way more than any blackberry gaffe!
It was funny when John McCain had trouble remembering which Islamic sect was what and Lieberman had to whisper in his ear. It was a gaffe, and great fun. And then he made it again. And again. And now it comes to this.

The decision to open a tribute to the 9/11 victims by invoking the Iran hostage crisis (1979 I believe) has taken this lack of understanding to a whole new level. How can you open a tribute to someone by showing such a blatant lack of knowledge regarding what, and more importantly who caused their death? Does John McCain intend to chase bin Laden to the gates of Tehran, then the gates of Moscow? Then where? A trumphant return to Bejiing - this time taking all the gold?

Trading on the images of burning American corpses is bad enough. Sadly, it was not only the New York dead who were salaciously displayed. It is surprising even, when you consider this is the republican party who was in control of the levers of power when on 9/11 those lives were so abruptly cut short. This is a low in politics to be sure.

But to bring the Iran of 1979 back and try and tie it to this modern day tragedy is the depth of insult. Didn't Lieberman whisper in his ear that the Shiite regime of Iran has nothing to do with either Osama bin Laden or the attacks on America? Did it slip not only the mind of John McCain, but the collective mind of the entire republican party?

So one more time John, but slower: Al Quaeda ... is .... Sunni.[stop] Iran .... is .... Shiite[stop] Sunnis .... are .... at .... war .... with .... Shiites[stop] The ... Shiites ... did ... not ... attack ... us ... on ... September,11 2001[stop] You ... can .. not ... invade ... another ... country .... that ... had .... nothing ... to .... do ... with ... it[end of story]

How are you going to teach Sarah Palin foreign policy if you yourself are still fighting the ghosts of Regan's enemies?
