Anchorage Daily News Editor Pat Dougherty has finally fessed up to a three-month coverup, namely that, in the weeks before the Nov. 4 general election, he DID have a reporter, namely Lisa Demer, investigating the (still-unanswered) rumors around Trig Palin's birth. The revelation comes as part of an exchange of e-mails between him and the governor, excerpted on my blog.

Texas progressive pundit Jim Hightower's most famous book is probably
"There's Nothing in the Middle of the Road but Yellow Stripes and Dead
Armadillos."

Well, in case Dougherty didn't realize it before, in current Alaskan politics, there's nothing in the middle of the road but yellow editors and live wildcat Sarah Palin.

That said, he should have realized it.

In his blog post on ADN's editor's blog where he admits the deception, while at the same time dissing people with questions about Trig's birth (or Tripp's now) as conspiracy theorists, he tells Palin, in his New Year's Eve e-mail response to her, just how little cooperation his reoprter, Lisa Demer got from Mayor Whazzup and her staff and others.

In spite of that, in spite of the election upcoming, etc., shades of the 2004 New York Times, he decided to sit on Demer's reportage. And still is.

Hello???

Here's my blog take on this. Needless to say, Doughertyis getting royally reamed in comments.

Josh posted reader LG's comments about this earlier today, and I agree.

Can the MSM, like CNN in this case, talking about 2008's job losses being the worst since 1945 put the job-loss figures into some historical context? The 1945 population was about half of today. In fact, it's not as bad as 1982, even.

See my blog link for more about this vs. 1982, if you're under 40, and for concerns about the "worst since Depression" line becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Now, it is true, as Kevin Phillips has so well noted, that unemployment calculation methodology has been, to be blunt, "fudged" since 1982. That said, some of the fudging had been done before then, as Phillips has also written.

That said, as I note, there's a full percentage point difference
between 2008 job losses and 1982. Even with allowance for fudging, I
don't think you can say problems now are significantly worse than they
were then.

Former San Francisco Mayor and Assembly Speaker Willie Brown discusses a recent Blago phone call.

What the MSLBs (mainstream liberal blogs) are getting wrong? At least at Washington Monthly, pretty much everything in Stephanopoulos' blog Sunday. Rahmbo pushing Jarrett by name is NOT a "pro forma call."

What Angelic Funk didn't mention is any timeline discussion he had with Obama's authorized leaker, and how Jarrett being yanked fits into the one Blago-Rahmbo call and the four Rahmbo-John Harris calls.

But, at my blog post, the same as linked above, I ask the questions Stephanopoulos and Benen (among others, I suspect) didn't ask.

And, I agree with Willie Brown; not only ain't Blago going anywhere, he's still firmly in the saddle and Fitz has a weak hand in his whole cards.

Other points to note:
1. Obama's designated leaker, I guess, it's OK for him/her to leak, even with Fitz's cone of silence request.

2. Something else Steve Benen overlooked; this official leak is obviously PR spadework for the Obama report/review of Blago contacts. That report will NOT come out Monday. It will come out no earlier than Tuesday afternoon, so that it can promptly be buried by Christmas feel-good stories on the AP and TV.

3. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if Fitz hopes Obama, in a sense, does his work for him, his hand is that week. And, I wouldn't be surprised if Obama isn't obliging. Doesn't matter, Blago still isn't going away. And, if/when he does, he isn't going alone. Willie Brown lays out some more thought on that, with my analysis, at the top link, starting with Lisa Madigan being his Senate choice after Jarrett was off the table.
In fact, that wasn't the case at all.

"That was solely the choice of the president-elect," said Gil Duran, a spokesman for Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the California Democrat who chairs the congressional committee. Obama'' staff sent explicit orders for whom to include in the inaugural ceremony up to Capitol Hill, since Congress is, technically, in charge of that part of the day.

"Sen. Feinstein obviously disagrees with the views of Rev. Warren on issues that affect the gay and lesbian community," Duran said.

As Madden noted, that was the wheels of Feinstein's bus you heard, at least trying to run over the slippery Obama.

Beyond the lying itself is the nature of the lies of Obama/Obama campaign, speaking of "slippery."

As I get read for Democrats to again accuse me, a left-liberal, of not being liberal -- the lies are Clintonesque, in the same legalistic way. I guess you DO learn a few things at Harvard Law.

Meanwhile, in a mix of irony and petard-hoisting (for someone else, not him), Warren has already told the truth about the invite:

Warren's spokesman, A. Larry Ross, told Salon Obama had contacted Warren to invite him, not the other way around.

In a statement, Warren said, "I commend President-elect Obama for his courage to willingly take enormous heat from his base by inviting someone like me, with whom he doesn't agree on every issue, to offer the invocation at his historic inaugural ceremony."

Wrong, Herr Warren. Obama has no imperial-clothing courage after all.

With the United Auto Workers refusing to accept Senate Republicans' drastic take-it-or-leave it Hobson's choice on rapidly cutting union benefit overhead, an automakers' bailout for 2008 is as dead as a Fred Thompson presidential campaign.

First, there are advantages. Yes, advantages, and I'm assuming that GM isn't so bad off it can't make it a couple more weeks, especially since part of this time includes normal holiday plant shutdowns.

The next Congress won't enough GOP Senators to block any bill it doesn't like, including stripping out state environmental standards (California CO2), beating down employees, etc. And, Obama can have the bill waiting for his signature, and appoint his own czar.

That said, passing a decent bailout this year would have been preferable.

So, looking beyond last night to the big picture:

Who's to blame?

• Well, per the story, one problem is the Big Three have been in business longer in the U.S. than have the Japanese Big Three. They've got more pension overhead because they've got more retirees per current employees.

There's no "blame" there, of course, but there is a reminder that we may be comparing apples and oranges at times.

• Beyond that, as I've already said about two dozen times on my blog, the Big Three, and above all, the General, have plenty of blame to shoulder in different ways.

And, the United Auto Workers has its fair share.

Not counting enabling Michigan politicians, I would slice the blame within the industry as roughly 2/3 management and 1/3 unions. Besides BOTH being anti-environmentalist, the UAW knew enough of what was up, and wrong, on the management side. And, there is one other reason, detailed below, to fault the UAW to some degree. Within management, I'd give 2/3 of that blame to General Motors.

Per previous posts on this issue, I've noted that GM ignored early in-house minivan designs and hybrids research back in the '70s, as prime mismanagement examples; even today, its Allison division is a leader in making hybrid buses, but it still doesn't have a full-hybrid car.

I've also blogged on how UAW President Douglas Fraser invited the Japanese Big Three here in the late 1970s, but never made an effort to unionize their plants, despite having had advance contacts with the Japanese equivalent of the UAW and despite Honda's first plant being in Ohio, not the South, for example.

Both management and the UAW have plenty of blame on the "green" side, along with those enabling politicians. (Can somebody park a Suburban on John Dingell's front lawn?)

In short, a lot of these problems are a lot older, and more festering, than problems in the financial sector. Whether they are fixable without a structured bankruptcy (and how that would even be done on a privately-held Chrysler is a question itself) is an open question.

Finally, two wrongs don't make a right.

Rather than using the argument about how Crazy Uncle Henry Paulson's been so lenient with his investment banking A-list buddies, the argument should be flipped - the incoming Congress has the opportunity to be just as tough with the financial sector as with the Big Three. (I'll have a post up with more of these thoughts this afternoon.)

On, and especially given that normal assembly plant holiday shutdowns are just around the corner, Krugman (before he tried to qualify his words) is right -- GM should die.

"Any user of the information contained herein should not rely on any

A quiet or dirty little secret that the "Oracle of Omaha" doesn't tout, but the man who called derivatives "financial weapons of mass destruction" owns 20 percent of Moody's. First, I have to disagree with Robert Borosage. Policies don't evolve, Darwin-style. They are set and developed by people.

Next, to the primary matter at hand.

What else can you say about Obama's economic policy team, other than we don't officially have seven "dwarves"?

You can already look at possible dwarfishness level of at least some of the seven.

Of course, I'm far from alone on lamenting Obama's lack of progressive appointments.

And rather than just criticize, along with other critics, I can say I have had somebody better in mind than Larry Summers.

Joe Stiglitz has already, before today, come to mind.

But, Stiglitz has loudly lamented the shortfalls of neoliberalism the last few years. The fact that he apparently wasn't even on Obama's short list indicates just where Obama's thinking is, IMO.

As for Treasury AND other top financial positions, I can say (beyond thinking Stiglitz would have been very good) he should not have appointed any Goldman Sachs alum, given their track record. Beyond that, as I also wrote in a column at my newspaper company, I suggested an academic not connected closely to Wall Street. Without me naming names, there's plenty out there that would fit the bill.

Oh, and for good measure, take note that Warren Buffett is not as innocent of involvement in the subprime bubble as he has claimed.
