Just a few cites to support the #'s:

The vast profits from the slave trade to the Americas became a major element in the British economy and the West Indian trade in general. It has been estimated that the British slave trade alone shipped 2 million slaves from Africa to the West Indies between 1680 and 1786. The number of slaves shipped to the Americas in 1790 alone may have exceeded 70,000. According to another estimate, during the nearly 400 years of the slave trade, a total of 15 million Africans were sold into slavery and some 40 million more lost their lives in transit.
http://encyclopedia.farlex.com/Chattel+slaves

In terms of absolute numbers, the lowest possible (and only barely possible at that) death toll we can put on the trans-Atlantic slave trade is 6 million. If we assume the absolute worst, a death toll as high as 60 million is at the very edge of possibility; however, the likeliest number of deaths would fall somewhere from 15 to 20 million.....If 5 million slaves were shipped in the 18th Century (the busiest century, see Hugh Thomas, above), then the 18th Century death toll could be around 8.1 million.

Obama is not jsut laying low. Obama is creating a plan the likes of which this nation has never seen.

He is going to unleash a tidal wave of change when he takes office. It is going to be similiar to the scene in the Godfather, where Michael Corleone is at the baptism of Connies baby becoming the Godfather under the rites of religion while his true rise to power is unfolding across the nation as his soldiers consolidate his power by waxes his enemies.

The difference is that he is going to send out the heads of his cabinet and agencies and they are going to unfold laws, regulations and policies that benefit the American people.

There will be sweeping changes. And the media will not be able to cover them all because Obama will unleash them simultaneously. The changes are going to be broad and deep.

The diluge of information will swamp the media and they will not be able to adequately cover the changes in detail.

Only in the 3rd year of his Presidency will they be able to look back and see the profound nature of how he changed our government.

Right now the naysayers and tongue waggers and gossipmongers are left to whine and disparage to raise doubts and circulate rumors and innuendos that will diminish their credibility such that no one will pay heed to their negativity in the future.

I know Obama as a Constitutional lawyer is going to turn this government upside down. This man has been waiting to make these changes.

If the media was smart they would look up some of his former students and colleagues to find out what all Obama talked about as being unconstitutional while Bush was in office.

YES!!

The media could be doing a ton of stories on how historic his campaign was. They could do stories on his fundraising prowess and put that in historical perspective. They could do stories on his metoric rise for the State Senate...his soaring oratory. Or even the massive crowds that came out to hear his speeches from sea to shinning sea.

But nooooo, all we get are story after story on Palin and speculation on what the GOP is going to do and how they are a divided party.

Why?

Because the media is failing to build up respect for the Obama electorate. Failing to grant him praise for his brillance as a strategist, failing to admire his astute political skills or his commanding itellect and about all his unsurpassed leadership skills.

We should be seeing profile after profile that compares this man to prior Presidents at this stage what experiences they brought to the table.

Instead of the American media exalting the era of a new unparalled Presidency...they instead are wallowing and whinning and promoting stories to the 48% who DIDn't vote for Obama.

This is a disgrace. The only thing the media is willing to do is promote Obama like he is a commodity.

Can you beleive it? What is the only thing the 52% can hear....a DVD for SALE....they are shamelessly hawking ...we have to pay for information that will reveiw his speeches...

Never in the history of our nation has a President-elect been so conspicuously ignored while they provide interview after interview on a nitwit twit name Palin.

I think it is plain crazy to brand all these folks as 'clintonites'...it is a label just like 'flaming liberal' nothing but a right wing radio/media talking point.

We on the left have to reject this characterization, we cannot let the GOP control the language and verbage.

Obama is turning to people WITH EXPERIENCE...end of story. Simply because you worked in government during the Clinton administration does not make you a Clintonite.

Once this 'clintonite infested' meme takes hold they will use it to batter and insist that there is no change!

That's false.

It is no different than a team with a losing record getting a new coach with some of the same players on the rooster from the former coach.

What that team does under the new coach is go ahead and win championships!!

Stop letting the right control the talking points.

I agree Ioway. That is why I could not understand what all the money was for. Sounds odd. I guess this is another juncture where the lobbyists can set in and buy all the seats at the table even before any announcements are made.

I suppose it is a good thing Obama had funds left so he is not beholden to special interests?

I know Rahm Emanuel is soliciting money for the other Congressional races by sending around a letter from Bill Clinton asking for money. I am tired of all this constant begging.

I do not want to have non-stop solicitation from now until 2012 when Obama runs again. I sure hope he does not have to start running in 2010.

Historically, that has been the pattern. When the country elects a Dem President, typically the Dems lose seats in the next Congressional election.

The nation likes to keep a 'balance' in terms of the executive vs. congressional branches. In the last 16 years this has resulted in gridlock and perhaps we will not see that happen in 2010, but in all probability we will.

Obama may make an appeal to the masses and tell them he needs a Democratic congress to make good on what he said on the campaign trail and that could possibly get a response from the electorate.

Both LBJ and WJC loss a Dem majority of Congress. For LBJ it was discontent with the Vietnam war and for WJC it was the 'liberal agenda' they were afraid of with Hill and her universal health care.

No Yobama..it was spin on your part.

One of the things about being American and this being a discussion board is that I get to state my views without regard for how YOU might state them. I also get to disabuse you of any spin you choose to put on my posts.

Furthermore, I do need to dig at HRC. I made a simple statement of fact. Which because you are emotionally unhinged about Clinton doesn't mean I was making a dig.

The praise for Kennedy was also a call to ensure that folks are vigilant and not allow others to usurp his life's worker as HRC did in the primaries. Now, for some reason you think highlighting how HRC tried to usurp Kennedy's work is a dig at her rather than a push to ensure that no one is allowed to take his achievements and promote them as their own platform. HRC is one example of that. There could be several others. Her's is the most recent and most blatant.

Noting those actions is not a dig rather it is a simple truth that you appear not to be able to handle.

YOU want to focus on HRC...My post was about preserving Kennedy's legacy.

I might even be able to see your point if this WAS the primaries. Since it isn't and since we do have a new President...it is you that is engaging in spin for spin sake.

You sound like Hannity and Scarborough...just have to make things divisive when there is no animus involved.

I suggest you take a break from seeing digs everywhere.

It is a new political season.

Neither Biden nor Rahm are yes men...that speaks volumes about the strength of Obama's leadership. He is not leaving the big guns on the street to be aimed at him...he is bringing them into the fold so he can aim them.
