Bill Nelson, D-Fla. listens on Capitol Hill in Washington. Democratic senators on Friday called on federal regulators to investigate Verizon Wireless, the country’s biggest mobile provider, for secretly inserting unique tracking codes into the Web traffic of its some 100 million customers. Data privacy experts have accused Verizon of violating consumers’ privacy by using “supercookies,” an identifying string of letters and numbers attached to each site visited on a person’s mobile device. “This whole supercookie business raises the specter of corporations being able to peek into the habits of Americans without their knowledge or consent,” said Nelson, the top Democrat on the Senate Commerce Committee, in a statement. Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) on Friday issued a statement on House Speaker John Boehner’s (R-OH) planned resignation that perfectly captured the dynamics that reportedly influenced the speaker’s decision.

“After Speaker Boehner fulfilled his dream of the pope speaking, he is just plain tired of dealing with the right wing extremists,” Nelson said in the one-sentence statement.

Some of the most conservative members of the Republican caucus had been calling for Boehner to step aside. A Boehner aide explained in a Friday statement that the congressman would step down to avoid “prolonged leadership turmoil.”

Politico also reported Boehner said Thursday night that he had nothing left to accomplish in Congress after successfully bringing Pope Francis to the U.S. Capitol.
